Whitehall Sailing
When there is a nice wind blowing and the water is right there’s nothing quite as enjoyable as sailing a fine classic boat. The sights and sounds experienced in a small sailing craft rejuvenate the senses and tune the mind.
Whether handled by a novice or an experienced sailor Whitehall’s small craft are a delight to sail. They are ideal boats in which to sample traditions developed and handed along for thousands of years. Learning to sail is one of the things that anyone who enjoys the water simply must do at some point in a lifetime. Learning is fun and once understood the same principles apply to any sailboat no matter what the size.
The only direction a sailboat can’t sail is straight into the wind. But by carefully trimming the sails and steering a straight course a sailor can handily sail up into the wind, tacking (zig zagging) towards its source.
All Whitehall boats are excellent rowing craft so if the wind drops, coming home is a pleasure.

While learning to sail one can simply row out to clear water and practice unobstructed. A sailboat that is also a good rowboat is undeniably a safer craft.
Sailing models are fitted with a modern adaptation of the Standing Lug, a style commonly found on craft of this size before the 1900s. This traditional salty looking rig is well suited for smaller boats for a variety of reasons.
A larger sail area is possible with the Standing Lug rig, providing more power and speed. The sail is also carried on a much shorter mast which is free standing. The heeling moment (tendency to tip) is greatly reduced with the lower centre of effort making steering and boat handling easier, more comfortable, and safer. Not to be confused with a “dipping lug” this rig can be tacked without lowering the yard or shifting it from one side of the mast to the other. The sails are easy to hoist and set up; they can also be dropped or lowered when under way.
