The sailing model of Whitehall Spirit 14 row boat fitted with its Standing Lug Rig is reminiscent of the sailing Whitehalls of the last century. Whitehalls that both rowed and sailed were prized by the New York City Harbour Police in the mid 1800s because they needed the fastest rowing boats for harbour transportation.
It takes only minutes to slip the free standing mast into its socket and haul up the sail. This boat is fun to sail alone or with one or two crew.
The Whitehall Spirit 14 is fast under sail and can easily exceed its rowing speed of 5 knots as it slips lightly across the water. It handles crisply due to the large kick- up rudder. Boat speed can easily be maintained for smooth tacking in light airs in spite of the long tracking keel. The jib is useful in heavy winds when the main can be dropped, rolled on the boom and stowed inside the boat next to the gunnel. The centerboard trunk shown enables the boat to be fitted with a sliding seat sculling unit, complete with hinged bronze outriggers, and 9'6" open water sculling oars. The conversion back to a traditional row boat or sail boat takes only minutes.
This row boat is our most popular model for those who desire the ultimate classic traditional rowing boat or slide seat sculling boat that also sails exceptionally well.
The Sailing model is also available as a slide seat sculling boat. click here for a picture.
